Chapter Thirteen

Tarianya

Ignoring Selig when he called me back, my mates and I walked away from him and that cursed stone.

Finn squeezed me to him. Your magic lit up the whole sky like a bolt of lightning.

I looked down at my fingertips. They still stung from the burning magic. Selig said I’m like Malvolia. I was surprised at how easily I was able to make my thoughts project to them. The act was like second nature, almost as easy as breathing.

Ignore him. Asher placed a comforting hand on my back, growling at the gray mage as he approached. He’s just trying to get under your skin.

You don’t think he could be right? I asked them.

Absolutely not, Asher barked, his voice ringing loudly in my ears.

Why?

For starters, Finn said, green witches don’t turn evil.

But what if I did? I thought to myself, too afraid to voice my fears to my mates. What if that was the real reason my parents took my memories? Their confidence in me was unsettling. Shirina had taken care of our children while I plotted a war. How did that make me good?

“I wish you’d reconsider your training, Princess Tarianya.” Selig clasped his hands together, looking far too humble as he bowed his head in submission. “We haven’t gone over curse chambers.”

I wasn’t buying his act of humility. “How to make one or how to break one?”

He gave me a funny look. “Curse chambers can only be broken by the witch who made them.”

“Oh,” I answered, deciding not to tell him I had broken a fire mage’s curse chamber before. “I’ve used enough magic today,” I answered, turning up my chin and giving him an unwavering glare. “You can teach me tomorrow.”

He clucked his tongue. “Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Malvolia’s troops—” He swore when Luci bolted from behind a hedge and slammed into Asher’s back.

“Watch it!” Asher snapped.

Luci blinked up at him with luminous eyes. “I-I...”

“Luci, what happened?” I asked as she dripped water onto the grass. Her hair and dress were both soaked.

Asher and Finn snapped like rabid dogs when two soldiers wearing Windhaven crests and purple plumes in their helmets rushed into the clearing.

“What’s the meaning of this?” Selig demanded.

“Sorry, sir.” One of the soldiers stepped forward, giving the mage a curt bow. “We are looking for a maid.”

“There.” Selig waved dismissively at Luci.

Luci batted her lashes at the soldier, the blotches on her face deepening as she squeezed between me and Finn.

The soldier blanched when he looked at her. “No, not her. This maid is fair of face.”

“Rude!” I snapped.

The soldier’s cheeks colored, but he didn’t offer an apology.

“Well, as you can see,” Selig drawled, “there are no other maids here.”

“She came into the maze.” Scratching his head, the soldier spun a slow circle like a dog looking for his tail. “Where else could she be?”

“That’s not our problem,” Selig spoke through gritted teeth. “You’ve interrupted our training long enough.” He waved away the guard like he was shooing a fly. “Go!”

“Come on,” Asher snarled, grabbing my arm.
